It contains two electrodes: the cathode, a hot
filament or a small metal tube that emits hot electrons through thermionic
emission, and the anode a plate element is the electron collector. In the diode, electrons emitted
by the cathode are attracted by the board only when it is positive with respect

With lower negative potentials
the electron flow depends on the potential of the grid. The ability of triode
amplification is dependent on small changes in voltage between the grid and
cathode, which in turn cause large changes in the number of electrons reaching
the anode. With the passage of time have
developed more complex tubes with additional grids that provide greater
amplification and perform specific functions. The tetrodes have an additional
grid, next to the anode, forming an electrostatic barrier between the anode and
grid.
This prevents the feedback from
the same high-frequency applications. The pentode has three grids
between the cathode and anode, the third grid, the closest to the anode,
reflects the electrons emitted from the anode heated by electron impact when
the electron flow in the tube is high. The tubes with more grids,
called hexodos, heptodos and octodos, are used as mixers and frequency
converters in radio receivers.
Almost all vacuum tubes have
been replaced by transistors, which are cheaper, economical and reliable. The pipes still play an
important role in certain applications, such as power amplifiers for radio and
television transmitters or military equipment that must withstand the voltage
pulse induced by atmospheric nuclear explosions that destroy the transistors.
